Columbia Exposition
May 1, 1893, was the opening day of the Columbia Exposition in Chicago. This was the first World’s Fair to feature a midway with carnival rides (the Ferris wheel debuted there) and performers (which included Ghawazee dancers).
Oum Kalthoum
Oum Kalthoum was born on May 4, 1898. She was one of the most influential singers of the 20th century. This photo of her is displayed in the Oum Kalthoum Museum in Cairo.
